Goma, Saturday 18.3.23

Dear donors big and small,

today’s opening of the 4th Interplast REHEMA Hospital in Goma was a great event in the city of 2 million people. I had to fly to Goma in my old age because our Interplast Chairman Dr. Andre‘ Borsche was on the same mission for our 3rd Interplast Sushma-Koirala Memorial Hospital in Nepal (www.nepalhospital.de).
With a big posse and many Kalashnikovs a great and rarely sympathetic military governor arrived to the opening and asked in German: “Where is the next bus stop ?“  He spontaneously agreed to sign a contract with the church that his government will take over the hospital in case of a financial emergency and incorporate it into the Medical Faculty of the University of Goma. He spoke for half an hour, was enthusiastic, asked in each room about the function of the equipment, and spent 3 hours in front of and in the hospital (www.gomahospital.de).

Mission accomplished.

Heartfelt thanks to all large, small and permanent donors ! The shell of the 1st floor for children and women is almost finished – and the newly qualified gynecologist should arrive from Egypt in April. The search for an experienced surgeon is still difficult because our present Dr. Kimona demands $ 3000 per month – while the other doctors have to be satisfied with $ 500. But Dr. Kimona comes for difficult cases.

With best regards from Goma – after a successful day –

your happy Gottfried
